Our Story

Port Elizabeth West Inner Wheel Club was founded on the 14th August, 1970.

Up until about 3 years ago, we concentrated on the needs of children, but just before Covid, we decided to assist an Old Age Home for residents living off a government pension, which is extremely low.  Due to Covid, our fundraising was stopped for the year 2020/21 and assistance consisted mainly of collecting and donating 2nd hand clothing, books, household appliances, linen etc.

What We Do

Adhock Home Support

In 2021/22 we started fundraising in earnest when we saw the amenities our older citizens had to live in. They are living in old army barracks, made from concrete, most blocks having a minimum of 5 rooms and a bathroom that they all have to share.

The bathroom we chose to upgrade was disgusting. A toilet, washbasin and rusty old bath which leaked across the floor every time it was used. We removed everything and split the room into 3 sections, all tiled – floors and walls. The first section was the toilet. Previously when somebody was having a bath, nobody could use the toilet. The 2nd section was a small bath in its own enclosure and the third room contained a walk-in wheel-chair friendly shower with a builtin chair and hand rails everywhere. After this, we introduced the Adcock Home to a sponsor who was willing to upgrade all the other 12 bathrooms as their charitable outreach for 2022.

In the meantime, we continue to collect things like carpets, furniture, household effects, linen etc, all in an effort to improve their living comfort, and most gifts are age appropriate and include food.

As residents come and go, there is always a need for furniture, household effects and linen, plus food that can be stored till a month of need.

Sandwiches for Cancer Patients

For many years we have made sandwiches for cancer patients who come to the Provincial hospital in Port Elizabeth for their treatment. This ongoing charitable service has been in place for more than 10 years.

Many patients leave home very early in the morning to travel to Port Elizabeth and do not have time to eat and then have to endure their treatment without any food. All sandwiches are carefully made and individually packed for cleanliness. We share this charitable cause with many other organisations in Port Elizabeth
