Bridging for Life
New Vredenburg High School
As we mentioned previously, we are really excited with this new project. We have partnered with the Valued Citizens Initiative and are working with a group of 32 Grade 12 learners.
We started their school year by delivering stationery kits with pencil cases. They had a fun afternoon decorating and personalizing their pencil cases (bags). The exercise was to allow them to embrace their core values that will give them motivation during the school year ahead.

In addition to the stationery, we gave them posters of quotes of encouragement to colour in to decorate their classroom. Why is Colouring so important? Not only is it a classic pastime for children, but it is also a simple activity that helps children to develop cognitively, psychologically by calming the brain and relieving stress, and creatively as it sparks their imagination and gives them an opportunity to express themselves. It is also an activity where they can embrace the imperfect as there’s no right or wrong way to colour and it is a non-competitive activity.
We will follow their progress as they work through the prescribed program by visiting regularly and encouraging them to study hard to succeed not only through their exams, but into their chosen careers and tertiary education.
The appreciation for what we have done so far makes this project so rewarding as the following messages indicate;
“… the power of empathy, care and support brings so much joy in the hearts of our Grade 12 learners. Valued Citizens Initiative is thankful for the support provided by the Inner Wheel Club of Saldanha. Your investment in the future of our children enables our learners to know that they have a support system, to anchor that they matter and this means a lot as they will be the first ones writing Matric in New Vredenburg High School. Thank you Naomi and the whole team of the Inner Wheel Club of Saldanha”.
The school Principal has acknowledged us (on the District 935 Facebook page) and in a message; “Our Valued Citizens learners from New Vredenburg High School have gained the heart of the leaders of Inner Wheel Club of Saldanha last year! So, in 2024, they have committed their support to our young leaders who have portrayed consistency, courage and commitment to lead their dreams. Stationery was provided to all our Grade 12’s with pencil cases to personalize with their values to anchor who they are and motivation messages set on the walls. Our learners and Valued Citizens Initiative are thankful for this support and care. This session transformed as a lesson where our learners understood the power of empathy to ensure that everyone runs their own race!”
