Two Great Ideas Make for One Ideal Project
Bags of Hope for Langebaan
The first idea is to combine ingredients for a meal into a jar or a Ziplock® bag. This idea went viral during lockdown with over a million views on Facebook. So how did it all start?
Angie Mayo of Health, Heart & Home describes how during lockdown, she saw how many people were going hungry. Having previously seen a soup mix in a Ziplock® bag she decided to fill a coffee jar with the ingredients (each bag or jar feeds four persons). She took a photograph and posted it on Facebook. This post went viral reaching over a million people. It shows how people of South Africa really do care.
Angie says, “Imagine if each person who viewed the challenge on Facebook contributed one jar of hope. That would be 4 million meals.”
The second idea was when Mandela Day was created in 2010, to inspire people to embrace the values of democracy and contribute towards the ideals of ensuring a just and fair society in our beloved South Africa.
The Mandela Day Campaign message encourages people to use 67 minutes of their time to support a chosen charity or serve in their local community. The 67 minutes symbolically represent the number of years the former President fought for human rights and the abolition of apartheid. Mandela Day is a call for action for individuals – for people everywhere – to take responsibility for changing the world into a better place, one small step at a time, just as Mr Mandela did.
Inner Wheel Club of Saldanha serves the community of the Saldanha Bay Municipal District, situated in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It covers an area of 2000 square kilometres and encompasses a series of coastal towns and villages.
Fishing has been the main source of income for many families living in these areas. With the depletion of resources and now the implementation of quotas these families are struggling to survive on what little income they can earn.
The ideal project all came together when Inner Wheel Club of Saldanha packed bags of hope with soup ingredient, while using 67 minutes of our time.
